You can find all sorts of social media rules, tips and guidelines. The most important? Be human.

Communication has changed. Simply taking your advertising messages and bandying them about on social media doesn’t work. And it might actually be counterproductive if you annoy your customers by not following social media protocols. Try a conversational approach instead. Even highly regulated businesses, including pharmaceutical companies, can find ways to benefit from social media tools.

I wrote this paper in 2010, and while some of the tools have changed since then, the bottom line hasn’t. Be a real person, and you’ll be fine.
